It’s not an easy task to find quality green moscows. This color strain is a bit of a hard one to work with as most of the time they can appear blue depending on the light they swim under. According to Philip Shaddock, “…green version of the solid Moscow is simply a Blue Moscow with an increased number of yellow color cells.” (Genetics Premier, p. 27)
Further, in Bryan Chin’s YouTube video on Breeding Solid Green Guppies he mentions that the angle of the light shinning on the guppy (Best angle would be 45 degrees or straight) makes a difference in what color, blue or green is reflected back at you. This is a great video (All his videos are great) to watch if you are working or planning to work with green moscows.
My original breeding group was a nice shade of green (Lighter green than my current breeding group) but many times they appeared more blue and a lot of their offspring turned out to be actually blue in color. It’s just the way things go. Though they were still pretty, I wanted to work with green, not blue.
I have been trying hard to choose the darkest green males to work with even though with moscows, the color comes from the females whereas the moscow gene comes from the males. You can’t always see the green in the females with this green moscow strain so it’s a matter of picking out the females produced from my current group and taking them back to the current green males. It’s a work in progress, but that’s the fun of breeding guppies right!?
These are the USA bred green moscows we began our breeding program with. Though they are no longer with us, their genes live on in those we are now working with.
Beautiful shimmering green color with lovely flowing tails and dorsal fins.
Here's a short video of my breeding group of green moscow guppies. Taken outside in natural sunlight.
